Travel Guidelines

Travel to the USA

The safety and well-being of our members are of utmost importance, as such compliance with U.S. entry requirements is critical to making the trip as stress-free as possible. These guidelines are intended for all Maverick participants (athletes, coaches, staff, and family members).

Please consult the Govt of Canada Travel Advisory for updated information. It is important to stay informed of any sudden changes in U.S. entry policies or restrictions related to travel advisories or public health guidelines. Updates should be checked through official government sources such as the U.S. Embassy and Travel.gc.ca.

As of March 21, 2025, the USA is listed as Green (“Take Normal Security Precautions”): Travel advice and advisories for United States (USA)

The following information may assist Canadian sports teams when travelling to the United States:

Pre-Travel Preparation

Documentation

Make sure all participants have their identification documents in hand before leaving town:

  1. All adults (and teenagers 16 and older) must have a valid passport and any necessary visas for travel to the U.S. (ensure that passports are up-to-date).
  2. Athletes 15 and under crossing at a land border require an original or certified copy of their birth certificate or a passport.
  3. It is helpful to bring a parental consent letter if travelling with only one parent.
  4. It could also be helpful to bring documentation of medical and emergency contact details for your own benefit.
  5. If crossing as a group without parents, it is helpful to have documentation that proves registration in a tournament in case requested.

Travel Insurance

  1. It is recommended that participants have appropriate travel insurance covering medical emergencies, and other unforeseen events. This should be arranged before departure.

Health and Safety

  1. Any participants with pre-existing medical conditions should carry necessary medications and documentation, including emergency contact details.
  2. Ensure that members are aware of U.S. healthcare protocols in case of medical emergencies.
  3. Provide a safety briefing to all participants and parents regarding travel guidelines, including understanding U.S. entry procedures, conduct while in the U.S., and how to respond to potential emergency situations.

During the Trip

Compliance with U.S. Laws and Regulations

  1. All participants must comply with U.S. laws, including those related to sports conduct, safety, and behaviour.
  2. Any member of the group who violates U.S. regulations or is detained by authorities will be responsible for their actions, and the club may not be able to provide legal assistance.

Gender Identity Awareness

  1. For nonbinary and transgender participants, ensure that all travel documents match the individual’s gender identity to avoid potential issues at U.S. entry points.
  2. Any concerns regarding entry should be addressed prior to departure, and the club should ensure that all participants are aware of their rights.
  3. We recommend checking for any updated travel guidelines or advisories specific to gender identity before departure.

Emergency Contact and Support

  1. In case of any incidents, parents should be able to reach club representatives and the appropriate local authorities immediately.
  2. A list of emergency contacts, including Canadian consulate information, should be provided to all participants by Team Managers in conjunction with the Program Coordinator.

Return-Trip Considerations

Return Documentation

  1. Ensure all return travel is organized and that participants have the proper documentation for re-entry into Canada.
  2. Report any issues encountered during the trip related to entry, immigration, or other incidents to the club immediately for further review.

Feedback and Incident Reporting

  1. Any issues, incidents, or challenges faced during travel to the U.S. should be reported to the club’s leadership upon return for future review and to refine travel practices.
