The Maverick Marshalls will be first team in Maverick history to compete at Junior National Championship in the United States
The Maverick Marshalls 17 & Under boys’ team will be competing against the 36 best teams in the U.S. in July 2025
OTTAWA, Ontario, March 11, 2025 / — The Maverick Volleyball Club, Ottawa’s largest youth volleyball club, is pleased to announce that the Maverick Marshalls will be the first team in the club’s 40-year history to compete at the USA Volleyball (USAV) national championship in the Open Division, the highest level of competition, to be held in Minneapolis, MN from July 3–6, 2025.
According to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), over 500,000 high school students play volleyball in the United States. USAV is the national governing body of volleyball. Every year, USAV organizes a national championship for the best male and female high school volleyball players between the ages of 14 and 18 years. The Open Division is the highest level of competition and is limited to the top 36 teams for each age and gender group from across the country. Many of these student athletes go on to play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and some even play on the U.S. Olympic team.
In February, the Maverick Marshalls team qualified for the USAV 2025 Boys Junior National Championship (BJNC) in the Open Division for the 17 & Under age group. The Marshalls’ roster of 15 players is currently training intensely under the supervision of Head Coach Evan Lockwood, a former NCAA Division I volleyball player. Coach Evan said, “As the first Maverick team to play in the USAV Open championship, this is a historic opportunity for our boys to compete against the best volleyball players in the United States.”
Maverick President and founder Kerry MacLean said, “In the 40-year history of our Maverick Volleyball Club, many teams have secured bids to the USAV National Championship. The 2025 Marshalls are the first ever team to rise to this exceptional challenge. It is a new frontier for us and as such we are very proud of these athletes and coaches and will be cheering them on in this illustrious event.”
