Expanding the Maverick Board of Directors

A message from Greg Skotnicki, Vice President

August 7, 2025

Hard to believe it’s our 40th year! And we’re extremely proud of what we’ve accomplished in that time. Although the club was started in 1985, no formal corporate structures were established until 2008 where two corporations were formed – one to manage competitive traveling teams as a not-for-profit (NFP) organization, and a second for-profit organization to manage learn-to-play programs along with camps and clinics.

Since then, Kerry MacLean, John Nguyen and Greg Skotnicki have served as the board members of the NFP steering its growth by always focusing on offering a service that was leading edge. Athletes would voice their approval by encouraging their friends to join the club or moving on to other clubs if they weren’t satisfied with the club’s decisions and how it operated.

While a formal structure existed, up until 2020 the club operated very informally with volunteers like Frank and Tammy St. Denis, John and Sally Spack, Chris MacLean, Bruce Dunning, and Judi Mousseau effectively operating as the board and management of the club. Their tireless efforts is what this club has been built on.

More recently (and as the board gets long in the tooth), it’s important to ensure there’s proper succession plans in place to shepherd the club over the next 40 years.

A major change has been the move from volunteers to paid staff and professionalization of the operations. This has allowed volunteers to contribute at a high level and not have the burden of managing the day-to-day operations of the club.

The next step in our evolution is to expand the board to five members to add new perspectives and ensure continuity as the board eventually transitions. As such, we’re looking for three new members.
