Survey Influences Uniforms for 2023-2024

August 24, 2023

Two uniform surveys (Uniform Design and Personalization) were sent out earlier this summer, and the results and comments have informed implementation of the 2023-2024 jerseys.

Our sizing jerseys will be actual designs this year, so you can check them out during your sizing session on Sept 9th. See you there!

Below, you will find:
• Outcome of the Uniform Design Survey (including next steps and implementation requirements for players and coaches)
• Outcome of Personalization Survey (plus next steps)
• Images of the jerseys available for 2023
• 40th Anniversary Jersey Planning
• Big Mav Reunion for the 40th Anniversary
Uniform Design Survey (180 respondents)

• 88 respondents were athletes
• 92 were parents

Respondents rated their two most Important requirements:

165  Getting the right fit
100  Getting preferred number
95  Getting final jersey before early tournaments

The results indicate that:

  1. Having a uniform that fits well is very important
  2. Having your preferred number is slightly more important than having uniforms in time for early tournaments

• SLEEVES: Long sleeved (girls) or Sleeveless (boys) vs Cap or Short sleeves (change)? Responses overwhelmingly indicated a preference for the status quo (129 v 51 votes). This held true for athletes of both genders and their respective parents.

The results indicate “stay with the status quo,” long sleeves for girls, sleeveless for boys.

• JERSEY DESIGN (assessed by point system) 1st choice=1pt, 2nd choice=2pts, etc. lowest score is the winner

Although the grey received quite a few choices of first to third, responses overwhelmingly placed them as 7th and 8th choices.

Boys preferred black straight (classic), with black slash a close 2nd. White straight and white slash were their 3rd and 4th choices. Surprisingly, the red straight and red slash versions were 5th and 6th respectively.

Boys parents also preferred blacks as 1st and 2nd (almost a tie), but unlike the athletes, preferred the reds over the whites.

Girls preferred the red curved design by a wide margin. Straight blacks were 2nd, and curved black slightly edged out curved white for 3rd and 4th. Red straight and white straight were 5th and 6th.

Girls’ parents preferred the black curved best, but curved red almost tied. Next came curved white, black straight, red straight, and finally white straight.

The design question provided an extremely wide range of preferences as well as many conflicting comments (I like the red /red is too common) (white will get dirty/white is cleaner and more unique) (arms are too short/arms are too long/arms are too loose/arms are too tight to push up).?

A number of respondents thought the white fabric would easily stain, but this new fabric has shown itself to be very durable during libero test practices.

Some asked for player names on all jerseys, but this would require each player to purchase 2 new jerseys every year.

Results of the design question were somewhat inconclusive, so each team will decide for themselves.

NEXT STEPS (the Plan):

Based on these surveys, and to accomplish these requirements, we will proceed with the following:

  1. FIT: Size all athletes at tryouts on Saturday September 9th with a make-up sizing on Sept 11th.
  2. NUMBER: Families will complete TeamSnap profiles as soon as they have accepted an offer. Those profiles will include questions for returning players about the shirt number, colour, and fit of their existing jersey. Players who are new to the Club will indicate a series of potential number preferences.
  3. TIMING: Processes are currently being finalized to speed up the production process, and TeamSnap will be utilized to speed up the internal documentation and ordering process.
  4. GIRLS DESIGN: Retain long sleeves. Non-travelling teams continue with existing squad jerseys. Travelling teams will choose from the curved reds, whites and blacks as well as the straight blacks. Taking data from TeamSnap Profiles of their newly-formed team into consideration, coaches for each team will decide which jersey design(s) they will compete in (age groups that play with a libero will need two contrasting jerseys and presumably one will be the jersey that most players already have, provided they still fit.
  5. BOYS DESIGN: Retain sleeveless. Non-travelling teams continue with existing squad jerseys. Travelling teams will choose from the black straight or slash, white straight or slash, or red slash options. Taking data from TeamSnap Profiles of their newly formed team into consideration, coaches for each team will decide which jersey design(s) they will compete in (age groups that play with a libero will need two contrasting jerseys and presumably one will be the jersey that most players already have, provided they still fit).
  6. SIZING: As in previous years, sizing will be done at tryouts to speed the ordering process along. We will have samples of each jersey in some sizes so players can at least see what the finished product will look like.

For the 2023-2024 season, we will offer minor changes to the existing reds and blacks, so players can continue to play in their existing jerseys (if they still fit), and we will add a new white choice.

IN PREPARATION

FAMILIES and COACHES

  1. The decision as to which competition jerseys a team or age group will receive, will be made based on the economic realities or preferences of the majority on each individual team.
  2. Rostering of athletes to teams must be completed by coaches and submitted to the clothing coordinator on or before Sept 25th.
  3. Order sheets will then be completed for each team and submitted to the head coach for approval, and then submitted for production.

THE CLUB

• To eliminate one problem that surfaced last season, the Club has ordered and pre-paid enough fabric for 500 uniforms.

• The new fabric is a spandex-polyester mix, so it has more stretch and doesn’t crease easily.

• The new fabric is the best quality I have seen, is very breathable, and was tested in practice this past spring.

• Colours have already been approved (red was an issue with some last year).

• We will implement a better process to ensure all team options are chosen and player numbers are approved very quickly after teams are selected, so we can get the orders in without delay.

===========================================

Personalization Survey (132 respondents)

• 55% of respondents were parents
• 35% were athletes
• 9% were coaches

54% of all respondents will be directly involved in 17U or 18U this season

• 76% of all respondents love the concept of getting new personalized jerseys
• 14% don’t mind the idea, but the cost is a concern
• 9% didn’t voice an opinion at this time
• 2 people were against the idea

As for unique designs, 61% agreed with the idea, 15% disagreed, and 24% had no opinion.

OUTCOME

Although the vast majority like the idea, it was decided not to force the issue on anyone, it will be optional per person. Those who don’t wish their name on their jersey can leave just the Maverick ‘M’ on the back (as most jerseys now have). Also, since hyphenated names can be very long, the personalization can be a nickname (approval required), or a first name, or possibly initials – we’ll leave that up to the athletes.

A couple of people suggested more age groups, and it has been decided that 17U and 18U will have the option for personalizing their jerseys this season, particularly as this makes it easier for recruiting scouts to identify specific players.

Several respondents have offered their design talents, and we’ll be connecting them in the near future to begin work on ideas for the special 40th anniversary jerseys (2024-2026), thank you!

NEXT STEPS

Managing the addition of names increases the logistics requirements, so new requirements will be put in place to facilitate this.

The instant a player accepts an offer and makes their first deposit, they must complete their TeamSnap profile indicating (1) which jerseys they have that still fit well enough to keep playing in; (2) whether they want their name on the back; (3) the correct spelling of that name; (4) what their preferred jersey number is, and three alternates; (5) which two jerseys they prefer to compete in.

Once an entire team is signed up and the profiles have been completed, the 17 and 18U coaches will have 2 days to look over the data and:

• Specify to the Clothing Coordinator which two colours of jerseys the team will choose.?
• Orders will be prepared by the CC and submitted for final approval to Head Coaches.
• Approved orders will be sent immediately for production.

Athletes who are added later in the season are not guaranteed their preferred number or the option of personalization due to cost scale.

Personalized jerseys will be delivered to us 4 weeks after all 17U and 18U teams have submitted their info. In the meantime, we can help teams arrange for temporary jerseys.

40th Anniversary Jerseys!

2025 will mark the 40th anniversary of Maverick Volleyball (established in September 1985). To celebrate, we will be spending the next 10 months working on some new jersey designs and everyone will get at least one new design for the 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 seasons. Several survey respondents offered their design talents, and we’ll be connecting them in the near future to begin work on ideas for the special 40th anniversary jerseys,

Big Mavs Reunion for 40th Anniversary

It’s time to reach out to all Mavs Alumni – players, coaches, families and friends! Everyone will be welcome. Does anyone know how to reach the Hollywood Maverick himself, former Beacon Hill resident, Tom Cruise? Wouldn’t that be a fantastic cameo?!!

We are looking for volunteers to get involved in planning committees (yes, we’ll definitely need more than one committee to do this right). Stay tuned for another Team Snap message detailing the types of committees we’ll be fielding (to be sent out soon), in the meantime, feel free to contact me directly <chris@maverickvolleyball.ca>.

Go Mavs!
