Tryouts – January

Registrations. Tryout registrations for the Winter 2025 Regional Training Centre (RTC) are now CLOSED.

Tryouts will be held on Jan 11th and 18th for ALL groups at ESC Garneau and the Orleans Dome (6588 Carrière St, Ottawa, ON K1C 1J4). Please click on the LINK above to view the schedule for both dates (scroll to the right for Jan 18th). This is a live document, so check back for updates (last updated date/time indicated in the spreadsheet).

Multiple sessions. There are two tryout sessions for each age group and gender. Athletes should attend both sessions for their age group to ensure they can be properly and fairly evaluated. Physical Testing and on-court assessments are a critical part of tryouts (check schedule for your age group). *IMPORTANT: athletes must attend check-in before their on-court assessment or physical testing. Athletes who missed the first session on Jan 11th must attend the make-up check-in before their on-court session.

For New Families. We have a Virtual Parent Town Hall and Q&A session that goes over the tryout process and information. The link for the recording can be found HERE.

Ages. The RTC is for 11U – 18U athletes (2007-2014). Please view “Age Categories” under “The Process” to determine Age Group based on Birth Year.

Estimated Tryout Spots and Numbers per RTCs.

11/12UM: 15-20 spots (30 trying out)
13/14UG: 40 spots (110 trying out)
15/16UG: 40 spots (76 trying out)
15/16UB: 10 spots (25 trying out)
Tryout spots for the 13/14UB, 17/18UG, and 17/18UB will be determined based on the individual competitiveness of each athlete.

Safety Net. Those who are not selected for the Regional Training Centre, are not guaranteed any spots in our learn-to-play or recreational division. The LTP and Rec programs typically sell out very quickly, so, if the athlete is passionate about continuing at another level, we recommend registering for a program as well as for tryouts. If the athlete gets an offer for the Regional Training Centre, all costs for the LTP/Rec program will be refunded.

Tryout Fees.
Early Bird (early January) $75 +HST
Regular (mid-January) $95 +HST (dates TBD)

Deadlines. The Early Bird discount deadline is on December 20th at 11:59 pm EST, and the tryout registration closes on Jan 5th at 11:59 pm EST. Athletes who register for the Early Bird will have their T-Shirt size request guaranteed. Late entries are not accepted.

THE PROCESS

IMPORTANT: Make sure your registration information includes a valid email address that you check regularly.

Once you register for tryouts, your email address becomes part of our communication network through TeamSnap. Make sure you include any @maverickvolleyball.ca email addresses plus <donotreply@email.teamsnap.com> to your trusted contact list, so messages from us don’t get dumped into your junk folder.

Age Categories

Do not register the same athlete for more than one age group. The designated age category is based on a player’s birth date, however, an extended date range allows some players to try to play up or down a level, based on the best fit for athlete development. During tryouts, your coach can make recommendations if they feel a player should be in a more beneficial age group than the year of birth indicates.

11U – born in 2014 or after
12U – born in 2013
13U – born in 2012
14U – born in 2011
15U – born in 2010
16U – born in 2009
17U – born in 2008
18U – born in 2007

Tryouts will be held at ESC Garneau and the Orleans Dome (right beside the school). Athletes are to complete Check-in, Physical Testing, and one On-Court assessment during their first tryout session (scroll to the right of the spreadsheet for Jan 18th times and make-up Check-in/Physical Testing).

Update (Jan 7th): Based on the numbers of athletes trying out for the 17/18U RTCs, ALL age groups will be trying out on Jan 11th and 18th.

Winter RTC Practice Sessions and Locations

Practice schedules and locations can be found HERE.

Successful contenders will be expected to attend two practices per week. The first four weeks will consist of intense coaching and drills with some scrimmages (2 sessions/week). The next eight weeks consist of one practice session and one competition day.

Schedules and locations for weekly sessions vary by age group, but will generally be in the East End.

TRYOUT REFUNDS

We realize that family schedules sometimes conflict, or that injuries may happen at an inopportune time, forcing athletes to forgo tryouts.

Full refunds are available until two weeks before tryouts, no refunds after that.
