New Mav Tryout Policy

June 7, 2024

Dear Members,

Thank you to all those who responded to the survey about the OVA’s 2024 tryout policy changes, it was very beneficial to have so many parents and athletes provide their opinion.

The Maverick Technical Committee has carefully considered your preferences, several practical constraints, as well as the possible impact that this new policy has on the club. Based on these factors, we have decided to put a temporary policy into effect for the fall tryouts of the 2024-2025 season. We will review the impact of this temporary policy at the end of the 2024-2025 season and ratify or adjust the policy as necessary.

Please note: when we refer to the “age-dependent expiry date”, it is the OVA-imposed date until which the offer must be held for that specific player. These dates vary for each age group (hence “age-dependent”). After the “expiry date”, the Club may offer the spot to another player.

Maverick Tryout Policy for 2024-2025 Season

11U-15U Process
If an athlete is trying out for the 11U-15U age groups in the fall, the tryout process will not change from previous years. All athletes, including new and returning athletes are invited to sign up and attend tryouts. Competitive Offers will be sent out 48 hours before the age-dependent expiry date (players have 48 hours in which to respond). LTP/REC Recommendation Letters can be sent out after an athlete has attended at least two tryout sessions. Please be aware that athletes can wait until the age-dependent expiry date to accept or decline an offer, regardless of when they receive it.

16U-18U Process
There are three main processes through which an athlete trying out for the 16U-18U age groups can obtain an offer for the 2024-2025 season to play for Maverick competitive programs (National, Provincial, or Regional):

  1. Re-signing current Maverick athletes: Athletes who will be in the 16U18U age category for the 2024-2025 season, and who have been selected for Team Ontario (White, Red or Black) or Volleyball Canada National Team programs (e.g. Youth National Team, U19 Program, and/or NEP), are eligible to receive an offer from the Maverick Technical Committee to re-sign during the June 1st to 21st re-signing period. According to OVA rules, players are not allowed to attend any tryouts for Maverick or any other Club after accepting an official offer.
  2. Open Commitment for national-level athletes: Any athlete can be offered an open commitment to play for the top Maverick National-level team by the coach of that team during the open commitment window (July 1st to August 31st). If athletes accept the commitment, they will receive an official offer when the offer period opens on September 6th. We have imposed a limit of 7 committed athletes per age group (including re-signed athletes). According to OVA rules, players are not allowed to attend any tryouts for Maverick or any other Club after accepting an open commitment.
  3. Open Tryouts: All other athletes are invited to attend tryouts as usual, and selections will be made similar to previous years. In compliance with the OVA tryout policy, the club will post all positions that are open before tryouts. Offers will be sent out 48 hours before the agedependent expiry date, LTP/REC recommendation letters can be sent out after an athlete has attended two tryout sessions. Please be aware that athletes can wait until the agedependent expiry date to accept or decline an offer regardless of when they receive it.
We hope this process allows us to balance all possible factors in the best way possible. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Jelle@maverickvolleyball.ca
