Coaching Experience

John Nguyen has devoted 24 years to the Maverick Volleyball Club, evolving from a player to a dedicated coach since 2001. With a passion for the game, he transitioned from coaching boys to girls, passionately guiding female athletes for the last 21 seasons.

As a trained Performance Coach under the National Coaching Certification Program, John also contributes to coach development as a coach evaluator for Volleyball Canada.

In the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA), he has served as Region 6 Vice-President, President, and VP of Finance on the OVA’s Board of Directors, currently participating on the OVA’s Finance and Audit Committee.

As Club Director, John has held multiple roles, including Assistant Coach and Head Coach, focusing on the 15U and 16U age groups at the National level for the past decade, helping athletes build strong technical and tactical foundations.

John’s influence extends beyond the club, nurturing talent for professional, National, NCAA, and USport levels, and he’s also a former member of the Club’s Technical Committee. His experience with Team Ontario includes coaching roles for Team Ontario Red, Black, and Elite, and he’s been appointed as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2025 Canada Games Team.

On the international stage, John led Team Ontario Elite in 2019 against the French Youth and Junior National teams. Though a planned return to France in 2020 was derailed by the pandemic, he recently served as an assistant coach for Team Canada U17, helping secure their spot in the 2024 U17 FIVB World Championships.

John’s journey reflects a commitment to developing young athletes and fostering a love for volleyball.

Coaching Philosophy

My philosophy centres on preparing athletes for success both on the court, in the classroom and eventually as high contributing members of our society.

Current Career

On a personal note, John is an avid golfer with a goal of achieving a single-digit handicap before his retirement in 6 years. He enjoys traveling and nine and dines with his wife, Catherine.
