Shaïnah Joseph commits to the University of Florida Gators

2012 / 11 / 16

Shaïnah Joseph (Mavs’13) committed today to the University of Florida Gators in Gainesville, Florida. The Gators are a NCAA athletic powerhouse who competes in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). This young team is currently ranked 16th in the NCAA and was ranked as high as 10th this season.

The Gators are coached by Mary Wise, who is in her 22nd season as the head coach of the program. Mary has a tradition of winning and developing athletes to the professional and international ranks. One of Shaïnah’s main reasons for selecting Florida was due to Mary’s involvement with the USA National Team program and her understanding that athletes need to play all six positions on the court even though the NCAA game has moved to specializing practically every position on the court. Shaïnah aspires to be an impact player on our National Team hence Mary’s philosophy fit very well with Shaïnah’s goals.

On a recruiting trip to Ottawa this past spring, coach Wise stated that Shaïnah’s athletic ability and work ethic makes her a “blue chip” recruit in North America.

Today’s signing is a relief for Shaïnah and her family as they have been corresponding with interested schools on both sides of the border for the past three years. Shaïnah and her family methodically evaluated all the programs and institutions and did not let the name or ranking of the institution alone influence their decision as most nationally ranked programs on both sides of the border expressed interest in having Shaïnah on their roster for the fall of 2013 and beyond.

“We are very relieved to be finished with this stage of the process and feel that by partnering with the University of Florida, Shaïnah will receive one of the best athletic and scholastic opportunities available.”

Shaïnah has been a career Maverick and has played at the 18U level since she was 15 years old. This upcoming season will be her third and final season at that age group. Shaïnah has represented Ontario at the National Team Challenge Cup and has also represented Canada internationally on the Women’s Junior National Team.

“We are extremely grateful to the excellent coaching staff, in particular coach John Spack and assistant coach John Nguyen of the Mavericks, for their continued support and counsel throughout Shaïnah’s time with them.  Not only have they shaped her on court skills, they have echoed the same personal values and ethics that we have attempted as parents to pass on to Shaïnah as she matures as a player and as an individual.”

The Club congratulates you Shaïnah on your signing and we wish you continued success this season and beyond.

Go Mavs Go! and Go Gators!
