Announcement of Head Coaches for the 2015/2016 Season

2015 / 09 / 08

Monday July 13, 2015

The Club is very proud to announce the following Head Coaches for the senior High Performance Teams for 2015/2016.

Our senior teams’ Head Coaches have over 80 years plus of combined coaching experience.

18U Girls HP (Broncos):Colin Walker

Coach Walker returns for his fourth season with the 1998 birth year and the 17U team that finished fourth in Canada last season. He has steadily guided this team to improved finishes throughout the past 3 seasons. Coach Walker has coached all age groups and both genders to team successes.

18U Boys HP (Mustangs):Francois St-Denis

Coach St-Denis returns to the 18U age group where he last won back-to-back silver medals at Division 1 Tier 1 Provincials (2012 and 2013) and bronze medals at Nationals in 2013 and finished tied for 5th in 2012 losing the quarterfinal to the 2012 Ontario Champions and eventual 2012 National Champion.

17U Girls HP (Gold Rush):Judi Shum-Mousseau

Coach Mousseau returns from coaching the 2015 Shotguns to a 10th place finish at Division 1 Tier 1 at Provincials. In 2014, she coached the 18U Shotguns to an 11th place finish in Division 1 Tier 1 Nationals. She has also won the 15U National Championship East in Division 1 Tier 1 in 2011.

17U Boys HP (Rangers):Bruce Dunning

Coach Dunning returns to the boy’s side after a successful five year coaching stint on the girl’s side where he was named the OVA’s 2015 Senior Developmental Coach of the Year.  Coach Dunning coached the 2008 18U Mustangs to a tie for 5th in Division 1 Tier 1 Nationals and was an Assistant Coach on the National Championship 18U team in 2009.

16U Girls HP (Blackjacks): John Spack “Senior”

John will lead the 16U Girls HP Program for the Club this season.

Surprisingly, “Senior” has not won a boatload of Provincial or National Championships (two but who’s counting?) in his 95 years of coaching. His impact has been placing athletes on Provincial and National teams (three made Senior National teams this summer) and they are stating that he was a major reason/contributor for their success. They along with numerous other athletes have been coached by John not only to the “next level” but excelling once they are there. John will be focusing on developing our next group of Team Ontario and National Team hopefuls as he head coaches our BlackJacks.

16U Girls HP (Wildcards): Patrick Henderson

This season will be Coach Henderson’s first year with the Club but he brings a wealth of experience as he has previously coached for the Scarborough Titans, Evolution Volleyball Club and Durham College. Patrick moved to Ottawa from Toronto last fall but continued to head coach and commute to OVA tournaments and worked with his assistant coach to run practices for his 17U Girls Evolution team – now that is dedication. At the conclusion of the 17U OVA season, Patrick was seen in the 14U Maverick Gold Diggers gym as well as the 16U Outlaws gym to help them prepare for the Beast of the East and the Canadian National Championships. Patrick’s teams are known to be technically sound and solid defensively. Welcome aboard coach!

16U Boys (Longhorns): Kerry MacLean

The “Prez” returns to the 16U Boys age group to work with our first year High Performance boys program athletes. Kerry is one of the “stage coaches” for the Club where coaches are asked to remain at certain ages so that all of our athletes will develop in the Maverick Way. Kerry’s accomplishments in the sport are too lengthy to be included here. He was most recently honoured by the OVA with the Diane Wood Special Achievement Award for his incredible contribution to volleyball in Ottawa and Ontario for the past 25 years. Kerry is notorious for challenging his athletes daily in the gym and pushing them to succeed. What’s incredible about Kerry is that with 30 plus years of experience he is still humble and will sit in on a practice with less experienced coaches and learn from them.

15U Girls HP (Ambush): John Nguyen “Junior”

John will lead the 15U Girls HP program for the Club this season.

“Junior” returns for his third cycle at the 15U/16U HP age group. John will be  another stage coach in the Club. John will coach the 2001s for their first year of High Performance with the intention to work with them through to their 16U year. John’s last two-year cycle, the 1999s, were ranked in the mid-50s at the end of 14U and they steadily improved to be tied for 9th in Ontario by the end of their 16U year. The 1999s also placed two athletes on the inaugural 16U Team Ontario and two other athletes were invited to the OVA’s High Performance Camp. Four of the top 48 invited athletes to the Team Ontario selection camp were members of the Maverick 1999 cycle.

15U Girls HP (Stampede): Christian Tanguay

Coach Tanguay returns for his 7th season with the Club to lead the Stampede. Christian has coached at the competitive and high performance level at multiple age groups for the Club. Coach Tanguay is notorious amongst the coaches for his impeccable seasonal and practice plans. Ask him what he has planned for the  last 30 minutes of the 38th practice of the season and he will be able to provide you with a detailed plan. Christian has just completed a two-year cycle where he coached our 2000 birth year athletes at 14U and 15U to steady and marked improvement over those two years.

Pre-HP was introduced in 2014 to prepare athletes to enter the full HP program at 15U on the Girls side and 16U on the Boys side. These teams will be introduced to some of the components of the HP program namely; one additional on-court training session a week, off-court strength and conditioning as well as nutrition and basic mental skills training.

14U Girls pre-HP (Outlaws) – Mohamed Shaheen

Coach “Moe” has been a staple with our development camps  and is a natural fit to lead the 2002s in their first year of our pre-High Performance program. Moe will be entering his third full season with the Club having previously worked with our 15U and 16U HP Girls teams. He brings a wealth of experience with him having coached in the Egyptian Club system (youth to senior professional) and was an assistant coach for Egypt’s Junior National Women’s team as they competed in the African Zone Championships. At first glance coach Moe is a physically imposing figure but he truly is a gentle teddy bear to the core.

14U Girls pre-HP (Raiders) – Rob McMullin

Rob McMullin returns for his second year of coaching with the club.  In his first year he coached the U13 Rattlers to a Div 2 Tier 1 Gold medal.  Rob comes from a strong volleyball background.  He won an OFSSA silver medal in his final year of High School and then went on to play 5 years at the University of Guelph. Rob was captain of his University of Guelph team for 4 of the 5 years, MVP for 3 of the 5 years and an OUAA all star in his last year.  Along with coaching volleyball he also coaches his daughter’s U9 soccer team.
