Mavs Alum Will Bulmer kicks off 'Movember' at City of Ottawa

2013 / 11 / 08

Dear Mavericks Friends and Family,

As many of you may have noticed, the upper lips of many men have recently become significantly more well insulated with the beginning of Movember 2013.  I am reaching out to you today not only as a Mavericks alumni, but as a student- athlete who spent much of my volleyball career and post secondary education successfully battling cancer. As a product of the Mavericks HP Program, the discipline, commitment and life skills that were instilled through the highly skilled and passionate coaching staff aided me in the most difficult portion of my journey with cancer, recovery.

Movember’s mission statement is to “change the face of men’s health.” My personal commitment to Movember stems from the fact that “health” to Movember means more than promoting early screening and awareness. Much of the funds raised by Movember go to charities that support men’s mental health and recovery for life after the hospital.

Although my personal experience was not related to prostate or testicular cancer, I learned a very dear lesson that cancer can touch any of us regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. As a young student-athlete, my world was turned upside down and I learned how imperative it is to be an advocate for you own health.  My mission through Movember is to bring attention and awareness to young men country wide that we have a shared responsibility to be a leader in all walks of life, specifically as an advocate for responsible health practices.

If you would like to donate and follow my moustache’s progress (or lack thereof) you can do so by accessing

Thank you and happy Movember!

Will Bulmer
